Jammu – The City of Temples

Known as the “City of Temples,” Jammu is the winter capital of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, situated along the banks of the Tawi River. Rich in history, culture, and spirituality, Jammu serves as a major gateway to the Kashmir Valley and is the starting point for the famous Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, one of India’s most visited Hindu shrines.

The city is dotted with ancient temples and sacred sites, including the sprawling Raghunath Temple dedicated to Lord Rama. Other notable shrines are Ranbireshwar Temple, Panchvaktra Temple, Bahu Fort and Temple, and the Peer Kho Cave Temple, each holding unique religious significance. Jammu also showcases historic forts, palaces, and gardens, such as the Mubarak Mandi Palace and Amar Mahal Museum, reflecting the opulence of the Dogra dynasty.

Surrounded by scenic hills and forests, Jammu offers serene natural spots like Mansar Lake and Surinsar Lake, perfect for picnics and boating. The city brims with vibrant culture, traditional Dogra cuisine, arts, and festivals. Handicrafts such as Basohli paintings, Pashmina shawls, and intricate wood carvings are popular among visitors.

Well-connected by road, rail, and air, Jammu is easily accessible. The Jammu Tawi Railway Station links it to major cities, while Jammu Airport offers regular flights to Delhi and other metropolitan areas. The best time to visit is from October to March, when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and religious tours.
